Baby Shower Cupcakes

My sister in law is throwing a baby shower and she asked me to help with making some "fancy" cupcakes. She saw my Hello Kitty cupcakes and decided that made me a cupcake professional. Well I am going to try to fool her into thinking this is true! ;) Here is a collection of ideas that I found through google images. It is for a boy, if you have not noticed, and I am in need of your input!!!

Decorative--I can do this. Fancy but doesn't necessarily scream baby?

These little babies all tucked in are adorable! Problem: I have never used fondant before...maybe too advanced for my first time?
Simple and elegant.
Simple with a little fondant action. Question: can I make fondant pieces like these a couple days before and then add to the made cupcakes later? I think that would be easiest. Less pressure the day of and gives me time to practice and mess up!
I could add a spin on the cupcake container...something like this or paper.
These are pretty dang cute.

Fondant feet?
These are so sweet (love the pacifier). Here I wouldn't have to use fondant...but I can only imagine the cursing when I mess up and there is a black line all over the poor baby's face (Don't worry, I don't really curse). ;)
Another spin on the ol' pacifier. These are a little more "fancier" non-fondant spin.
I like the mixture of designs here (my attention span needs randomness!). Some cute fondant with some simpleness as well. I do have to check how they are going to serve these though. She mentioned they might be a take home...so perhaps they all should be pretty nice...the poor lady who gets the boring blue one is going to hate my small attention span.
Yeah, I am most definitely not going to try to attempt this one...but it was too cute not to show...maybe when I am rich and famous for making cupcakes I will attempt such a masterpiece.
More fondant...I don't know that I am capable of making frosting look this clean. Is there a secret? Higher attention span? Huh? What?
These are fun...simple with a little store bought accessorizing.
The frosting design makes these extra fun...this is something I could do. But I cannot promise my cupcakes all come out this flat...between hot oven and crazy pouring batter...I am not so accurate. ;)
Simple...
More simple fondant (more my speed).
So my cupcake enthusiasts...what do you think? What do you think would be most easiest for my lack of fondant experience? Any tips on getting your cupcakes oh so perfect? Can I make fondant ahead of time? Which ones do you think are the cutest and most boy baby shower appropriate? Any fondant tips a beginner should know? Seen or made any cute cupcakes I must see before deciding?
Well I hope when that baby boy is sixteen, being all stinky, hormonal, learning to drive, and pick up on girls, that he remembers little ol' me and my scrumptious baby shower cupcakes...boys remember these type of things right?

  1. First off...congratulations on getting the position you interviewed for. That's so great!
Next, my vote would be the first batch and the little blue frosting one you called 'simple, but elegant'. But of course, they're all adorable, so you couldn't go wrong with any of these. : )

  4. I love the top pic. I have never used the fondant, but if you do I think the only doing a few would ease the pressure off. On the cake shows they make that stuff ahead of time. I love to decorate cakes, but wish I was better. One of these days I am going to take a class.

  5. just my 2 cents...the fondant is cute, but blech- it doesn't taste good. Personally, I like the first picture...eating a baby is kinda weird to me (just a personal hang up).

I'm sure what ever you do will be great!

  8. Beautiful. I am SO stealing one of these ideas (to show to the baker, cause I'm not talented enough in the kitchen to pull it off) when we throw my cousin's adoption/baby shower!

  13. I had to give you my two cents just because! Personally, don't go with all fondant...not too tasty! But if you did the fondant decorations, you can do those in advance and store them in an airtight container in the freezer for up to two months! I always like to do a few simple (I like the blue w/ the pearls) and then mix in a few more decorated. I would feel bad eating a baby face, but if you went with that one here's a trick...
Draw or print your design on a sheet of paper, tape to cookie sheet, cover design with waxed paper and tape down. Mix your regular buttercream icing and color it, put into bags with a circle tip. Use the picture as a pattern, but you need to do it backwords. You'll do your details first and work to the end filling and covering the details with the back (baby head). Put this in the freezer and after you ice your cupcake smooth, take frozen baby head, and place on top of cupcake. When it defrosts, it will melt into the cupcake icing.
I don't know if that made sense but the best I can do today! Good luck and have fun! I love planning parties!!!

  17. I love the first picture, especially if you present them all in rows like that!!!

  18. I love the cupcakes in the first picture. They are very pretty. Fondant doesn't taste good and it is almost like chewing gum. Good luck with your cupcakes (the Hello Kitty ones were cute that you did)!!

  19. I think they're all adorable! I wouldn't be able to do any of them - I'm all thumbs when decorating! I have a shower coming up for a friend and I SO wish I could decorate cupcakes like the pics you found. Let us know which ones you decided to tackle. Perhaps a rehearsal batch of cupcakes?

  20. Cute, cute, and more cute! The first picute is my absolute fAVE. And they actually do scream baby boy to me...so there! I don't have much experience with fondant, but I have seen that they sell sheets of it at Hobby Lobby (premade). You could just use tiny little cookie cutters to cut out your shapes, but Mel is right...fondant does not taste good. Whatever you decide I'm sure they will turn out beautifully!

  22. oh my goodness, all those cupcakes are so cute! I really like the second one, but it does look really hard. My favorite is the simple blue one with white sprinkles. Yum! Show us what you end up making!

  23. How fun! I really like #1 & the ones with the duckies & baby bottles. They are all very cute, though. I know you will do a fabulous job. I can't wait to see what you come up with.

  24. Ashley, I'm up for a few minutes and thought I'd stop by.. I'd stay away from fondant.. it's pasty and if you intend on eating it...beware. It's a very gummy, sticky and not very tasting confection. I'd stay simple and elegant.. It is a baby shower..but for a grown woman. I guess her age may depend on what I'd do.. good luck and stay in touch.Tracey

  25. How stinken cute are those cupcakes??????? I want to eat them all! I happen to agree with Tracey though...I'd stay away from fondant. The look is so great, but the taste, not so much. I think you can do some pretty things with piping, buttercream frosting, and little accessories...like those little store bought toys. Have fun and post pix when you make them!

  26. I prefer the simple and elegant choices. My preference would be chocolate cake with blue frosting and some sort of simple decoration like the beads. I also liked the way all the different ones looked together. I am no decorating pro, but I am REALLY good at eating cupcakes! Actually, when I was pregnant I had more then a few cupcakes. YUMMY!! If I was the mom-to-be I would love a little care package of cupcakes to take home with me.

  27. Just wanted to let you know you can make fondant yourself that does taste good! Just google "marshmallow fondant" for some easy recipes. You can flavor it with any extract you want. I've done vanilla, mint, almond, lemon and they're all yummy!

  28. Ashley, I feel like I know you already because we share so many bloggy friends. While I think the fondant ones are the cutest, I was at a birthday party last weekend and the cake was very fancy and had fondant. It did not taste any where close to as good as the cupcakes with the regular frosting. Maybe mix it up and do both? I am so excited to see what you pick!

  29. Hi,
Thank you, thank you for your wonderful comments on my blog.
You absolutely made my weekend, hurray!!!
Wow, cupcakes, new to me and I think it's wonderful.
I think the first one are very nice and simple but I also love the ones with ducks and bottles, so cute! I would eat ducks!
It should be fun to do so try out some diffrent ones and see what feels easy and fun to do.
I can come and taste, LOL!
I baked sugar cookies and decorated them with frosting in diffrent colors and some other things for the first time in my life today and it was soooo much fun!
It's going to be fun to see which one you decide to do.
    Have a wonderful weekend.
    Bodil.

  30. I think the first ones are the best, and least stressful. Infact I thought you were going to say you made them, and then I was just going to bow down and say, "I'm not worthy."

Is fondant good to eat? I don't know. If it isn't, I don't think I would use it.

    Good luck!

  31. I tried fondant for the first time last month for my son's birthday cake. You can make the fondant in advance and then place on the cupcakes. I made one practice batch before I made the real ones. If you want colored fondant, by the precolored stuff. Soooo much easier, and less of a headache! It's a little like playing with modeling clay and for the most part, pretty forgiving while you mold/cut/bend. Have fun!

  32. I love 'em all!! I actually like the simple baby blue frosting with pink sprinkles. If I tried to make those babies on top there would be fondant on the walls and ceilings. I'm dying to see what they will look like. I know they will be perfect, Miss Martha Stewart. ;)

  34. I've never used fondant so I can't offer any advice there. All of 'em are so dang cute that I have a hard time picking a favorite. Keeping it simple will save yourself a lot of stress in the long run...
