For Mother's Day this year I wanted to make a stepping stone with my kids that we could place in our garden. It ended up being a very fun project for us all to participate in and it came out beautifully. I know it will be something I treasure for many years, especially as my kids get older.
We used a mosaic stepping stone kit that came with the plastic mold, cement, templates, and glass tiles. I found a design I liked that we then copied. I also purchased letter stamps so we could stamp in their names. The kit comes with easy to follow directions and it came out perfectly!
We had the kids take turns coming over to place a few tiles.
After the tiles were all placed and the cement dried up a bit, I used the letter stamps to stamp the date and my children's names. Making sure your cement is the right consistency does take some time so it is good to make sure you have plenty of time to work with it.
We also will usually do some kind of Mother's Day craft that they make for me and each of their grandmas. This year we did some water coloring and added a message about why we loved them. We used our new shimmering watercolors they got for Easter.
For my mom this year we got this delicate customizable charm bracelet. She loved it!
Here is the stepping stone after if fully dried. It takes a couple of days to dry so it is definitely a project to plan ahead if being given as a gift.
I knew my mom would want one as well so we waited until her next visit so she could make it with the kids. We then gave it to her for her birthday.
The plastic mold did crack a little when we took mine out. But a little duct tape fixed it right up! We had enough glass tiles left over to make hers. We just had to buy some cement from the hardware store for her stone. The cement was slightly a different consistency but still came out great.
I love it so much and would like to make one more with all of my children's hand prints. It will be fun to have a little collection to enjoy in our garden!
