Repainting Toys: Melissa And Doug Slice and Bake Cookies

We love our Melissa and Doug Slice and Bake cookie set. I have had this set for at least a decade as I purchased it back before I had kids and used to take care of my newphews. It is well loved and between multiple kids and two moves, we lost one of the frosting pieces.

I started seeing other crafty moms repaint some of their wood toys and was inspired to try it on our cookies. I picked up some circle wood pieces from the store to replace our missing frosting piece. They weren't the same shape but I figured with a little repaint, the new color palette would tie it all together. Plus updating this set with colors I loved only made me fall more in love with this toy.

I used a couple of coats of acrylic paint (I have this great set with all kinds of pretty shades) to cover up the frosting. I kept the ones with white frosting and sprinkles since it matched with my color palette. It kept that familiar Melissa and Doug look I liked but just in the colors I wanted.

Once the frosting coat was dry I added sprinkles with more paint. Once everything was finished and dry, I added a coat of Mod Podge to help keep the paint from chipping. I also added velcro to the back of my new circle shaped frosting so that it could stick like the other cookies.

I am so pleased with how they came out! The circle fit right in with the new color scheme. Now I am tempted to repaint all kinds of things! For now we will enjoy our new to us cookie set. I hope this toy gets many more years of use. And such a great reminder to fix and update our existing toys to keep things fresh without buying more!
