31 Days of Creative Homemaking :: Day 15--Letting Your Home Tell Your Story

One of my most favorite things about homemaking is creating a home that tells our story.  I am quite infatuated with stories.  I love hearing them.  I love telling them.  I blog about them.  I take photographs that share them.  Story telling is a part of who I am.  But I also think it is a big part of creating a home.

I think we as humans are intrigued by the stories of people's lives.  We want to be a part of it.  We want to feel the emotion.  We want to be joyful when it is time to celebrate.  And we want to cry when tugged at the heart.

And at the same time I think there is a part of us who also wants to be known.  We want people to understand us and care for us.  Whether or not one wants to be an open book, I think there is a level of wanting to feel safe with people enough where that they are able to really get who we are.

When people come into my home I desire to draw them in.  I want them to feel welcome but also know that our home is a safe place of love.  I want them to feel cared for and comfortable but never too stuffy or intimidating.

I want the way I decorate or set a table to say I think you being here is deserving of some special attention.  I want the food to be delicious and simple to say that I want you to be able to enjoy your meal but casual enough where the conversation is just as important as how the food tastes.

I hope that when people look at our walls that they see the stories of my husband and I.  The story of patient young love that waited almost five years to be married.  A masculine husband who lets his wife create a feminine home.  A woman who honors and respects her hardworking husband.  A home that celebrates the little things and wants to remember the joy that life has blessed them with.  A collected home of years, memories, moments, and stories.

Print out photos, frame a love note, write out a well loved quote or poem.  Let people into your life.

Inviting people into your home is a big first step at letting them into your lives.

Let them be able to get to know you so that they will keep on coming back.

I am passionate about making a home that tells a story.  You can read more about it here, here, here, and here.
